Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Exodus 29:1-30:10 Matthew 26:14-46 Proverbs 8:14-26

“The New Man”

“Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”
[James 1:18]

Thus the whole man must crawl into the Gospel, become new, and have his old skin taken off, as does the snake does when it becomes old. It seeks out a narrow hole, crawls into it, sheds its old skin, and leaves it in the hole. Thus, man must also rely on the Gospel and God’s Word and confidently follow it’s promises, which never lie. In this way, he takes off the old skin, leaves behind his opinions, his will, his deeds, and becomes an entirely new man, who sees everything differently than before. Everything is changed – for in Christ – sin has been left behind. When the skin gets old, when sin manifests itself, we climb down the hole of repentance, and emerge with new skin as a new man of God.
