The Best of the Portals of Prayer
Read: John 8:12-20 / Psalm 112
“Jesus spoke to them saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
The Light of Life
Remember the moments when during a storm or a sudden electrical failure your home was plunged into darkness? Only after someone found a light; a candle or flashlight could you see again. One day on the Temple grounds of Jerusalem, Jesus suggested to a well-informed of Pharisees that they, too, were experiencing a fear of darkness. He advised them to follow Him as the “light of the world” so that they would not have to grope about in the darkness of their own spiritual ignorance. They were to recognize Him as the Light of Life by His crucifixion as well as by His identification with the Heavenly Father; “when you have lifted up the Son of Man, then You will know that I am He, and I do nothing of my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught Me” [John 8:28].
We know so well that the power of sin can overcome us with the darkness of shame and despair. Only Jesus can provide the Light of Life for our salvation. “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” [John 1:4-5].
Lord, You are my Light and my Salvation; who shall I fear? Be the stronghold of my life. Amen.
