Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Joshua 13:1-18:28 Luke 18:1-19:27 Proverbs 13:7-11

“Continuous Prayer”

“Pray without ceasing”
[1st Thessalonians 5:17]

Therefore, wherever there is Christian, there is none other than the Holy Spirit, who does nothing but pray without ceasing. Even though one does not move their lips and form words continuously, one’s heart nonetheless does beat incessantly; and, like the pulse and the heart in the body, it beats with sighs such as these: “Oh dear Father, please let Thy name be hallowed, Thy kingdom come among me.” And then, when blows from the world upon us, when temptations thicken like a morning fog, such sighing prayers will certainly find words. A Christian without prayer is just impossible. The pulse is never motionless; it moves and beats constantly, whether one is asleep or something else keeps us from being aware of it.
