The Best of the Portals of Prayer

Read: Matthew 12:38-42

Declared to be the Son of God

Is Jesus God’s only begotten Son? The answer to that momentous question hung in the balance when our Savior died on Golgotha’s cross. Because Christ had taught: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven” [John 6:51] many of His hearers left Him. When He said, “I and the Father are One,” they even took up stones to kill Him [John 10:30-31]. The high priest Caiaphas had placed Him under oath, saying, “I adjure You by the living God, tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God” [Matthew 26:63]. When Christ answered that He was, some members of the council said that he deserved death. They did not want to hear that – they wanted Him silenced forever.
Everything depends on the truth on the claim of Christ. If He is not true God, He is not even a great prophet, for then He would have told an untruth. Then we would have reason to doubt. Then our redemption, our forgiveness, our salvation, our resurrection, yes, everything would be uncertain. Then we would be without hope.
Thank God, the empty tomb, the message of the angel, and the many appearances of the risen Christ convince us that He is the true God. Oh how we should rejoice. Regardless of what may say and think, we have a Divine Savior who has redeemed us and all that have ever lived, are living, or will live.
