Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: 2nd Chronicles 35:1-36:23 1st Corinthians 1:1-17 Proverbs 20:20-21

“This is the Victory”

“Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.”
[Psalm 51:4]

The law awakens sin so that it becomes alive and gives death power and might over us. Thus, then, we come into death and hell … how are we freed from all of this? Who will remove from our hearts the Law, the handwriting that was against us {Colossians 2:14}, or our evil conscience? No human being is able to do this. But this is what does it, he says: “thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” {1st Corinthians 15:57}. This is the victory: that death has lost it’s sting. The Law can no longer awaken sin, nor can sin any longer make death strong, for Christ has atoned for our sin and has erased the handwriting, the Law, setting it aside and nailing it to the cross {Colossians 2:14}.
