Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Malachi 1 Rev. 20:1-10

“Jesus’ True Deity”

“ And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
[John 1:14]

Here John exposes who the Word happens to be, of whom he and Moses have spoken – namely – the Only Son of God, who has all the glory of the Father. Therefore, John calls Him the only, the Only-Begotten, so as to distinguish Him from all the children of God, who are not natural children of God, as is this One. His true deity is shown is this way; for if He were not God, He could not be called the Only-Begotten Son compared to the others. This is as much as saying that He and no other is God’s Son. This cannot be said of angels and saints, for none of them is God’s Son, but all are brothers and created creatures, children of God adopted by Grace, not born by nature.
