Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Exodus 32:1-33:23 Matthew 26:69-27:14 Proverbs 8:33-36

“A Book Such as This”

“ It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
[John 6:63]

Sad to say, there are few, even among those who should know better, who honestly say even once in their lifetime to the Scripture or to one of the Psalms; “you are my beloved book: you must be my very own psalm [song].” The neglect of Scripture, especially by spiritual leaders, is one of the greatest evils in the world. Everything else, arts or literature, is pursued and practiced day and night, and there is no end of labor and effort; but study Holy Scripture is neglected as though there were no need of it. Those who decide to read it, want to absorb everything at once. There has never been an art or a book on earth that everyone has so quickly mastered as the Holy Scripture – so they think. They are not words of literature – they are the Holy Words of God. These are Words of life, intended not for speculation and fantasy, but for forgiveness, grace, and mercy.
