Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Genesis 13:5 – 15:21 Matthew 5:27-48 Proverbs 1:29-33

“The Epiphany (appearance) of our Lord”

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.”
[Matthew 2:10-11]

The Maji here teach us the true faith. After they heard the “sermon” by reading the words of the prophet, they were not idle or slow to believe – lookin at the obstacles and hindrances they faced. They moved! First, they made a mistake and came to Jerusalem, the capital and did not find Him. The star disappeared … moreover, they were frightened … they underwent a good, strong battle for their faith … the light of nature and the light of grace cannot be friends. Nature wants to perceive and be certain before it believes. Grace believes before it perceives. For this reason, nature does not go further than her own light. Grace joyfully steps out into the darkness, follows the true Word of Scripture, no matter how it appears; whether nature holds it true or false, and still, grace clings to the Word. They followed the star – why? Because following the words of the prophet, they learned, would lead them to find the Son of God. What a journey. Trust -faith – go! No matter your hurts and struggles, it can be that easy. Have trust in the Son of God and go.
