Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Numbers 36:1 – Deut. 1:46 Luke 5:29-6:11 Proverbs 11:24-26

“When to Pray”

“In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.”
[John 16:23]

If you refuse to pray until you know or feel yourself worthy and fair, you need never pray anymore. For as has been said, our prayer must never be based on our worthiness, but on the unwavering truth of the Divine promise of Christ. We pray after all, because we are unworthy to pray! The very fact that we are unworthy, and that we dare to pray confidently, trusting only in the faithfulness of God, makes us worthy to have our prayer answered. And so, we must guard against deeming ourselves worthy because of our faith, but rather, we lean on Christ, trusting in the truthful and certain promises of our gracious God, who wants to reveal His mercy to you.
