“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
John 1:29
Our Lamb
When Pharaoh persisted in his refusal to let the children of Israel leave the land of Egypt, the Lord God told the Israelites that He was going to destroy the firstborn of the Egyptians. He instructed His people to select, for each household, a lamb without blemish, to slay it, daub its blood on the doorposts, and eat it while dressed for travel. At midnight, the angel of death moved throughout the land, killing the firstborn of the Egyptians but passing over the houses that bore the blood of the lamb. Thus, those families that took God at His Word were saved.
The Passover Lamb was a shadow of things to come. John the Baptist, pointing to the Lord Jesus Christ, said; “behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Jesus is the Lamb of God without blemish and without spot. But He who knew no sin was made sin for us. Silent, oppressed, afflicted, He was led to the slaughter. Christ, our Passover Lamb, was sacrificed for the sin of the world, and that means our sin also. He was wounded for our transgressions. He takes away what is offensive to the holiness of God and destructive to the happiness of man. He has redeemed us to God by His blood, our of every kindred and tongue and people and nation. Let us take God at His Word. Behold the Lamb of God, and be saved by His blood.
