The Best of the Portals of Prayer
Read: 1st Corinthians 10:1-13 / Proverbs 13
“By insolence comes nothing but strife, bit with those who take advice is wisdom.”
Proverbs 13:10
Be Humble Enough to Listen
Taking advice is not always easy. Within each of us is the voice of pride that likes to believe “I can do it alone. I don’t need the help of others.” The Book of Proverbs tells us that insolence breeds strife. This is true because, in insolence and pride, each of thinks we have all the answers. And when we discover we do not, conflict ensues. The Wisdom of Scripture encourages us to put pride aside, and be willing to listen to the advice of others. It’s not easy to be humble enough to listen, yet to do so can spare us from many painful experiences.
That’s what 1st Corinthians tells God’s people. Recounting many of the events Israel experienced during the wilderness wanderings, Paul concludes, “these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.” [1st Corinthians 10:11] We are pointed to Jesus, God’s own Son, in whom our sins are forgiven and by whom we become the heirs of God’s eternal kingdom. It is advice that is imparted by the Holy Spirit, our Counselor, who leads us to all truth.
