The Best of the Portals of Prayer

Read: John 1:3-5

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16

Let Your Light Shine

How are you at sharing your faith in Jesus Christ? As we think about sharing our faith, many images come to mind. In a Peanuts cartoon strip, Peppermint Patty tells Charlie Brown that she should have been an evangelist because she converted another kid at school by hitting him with her lunch box. Unfortunately, that is an attitude that runs rampant through our society with regard to witnessing about Christ. Right away, we think of knocking on doors, of coercing people, of shoving the message of Christ down their throats, something they may not even understand. These may be the negative experiences we use as an excuse to not share the faith. Christ tells us in the Sermon of the Mount to let our light shine. As the light of Jesus and His mercy shines, His light also shines through us. Rather than a “have to” motivation about sharing Christ Jesus, Jesus produces in us an attitude of joy in living and speaking that is the most effective witness for Him.

Gracious Lord, may the light of Your mercy shine in me and through me this day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
