Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Ezra 10:1-17 1st Peter 2:13-25

“Struggles and Weaknesses of the Saints”

“Consider the ancient generations and see: who trusted in the Lord and yet was put to shame.” [Ecclesiastes 2:10]

It is good for us to know of and hear of the weaknesses of the saints of the past, for these examples of their weakness are more necessary for us and bring more consolation than the examples of heroic and very great fortitude seen at times. Thus, the fact that David killed Goliath, a bear, a lion, etc., does not edify me very much. For I cannot imitate such things, since they surpass my strength and all my thinking and abilities. Although they commend the saints in their strength and heroic attitude, they do not concern – they are far beyond me.

But when examples of weakness and trials are set before me – when I read David’s complaints, sobs, fears, and despairs, they buoy me up in a wonderful manner and give me great consolation. For I see how they, fearful and terrified though they were, did not perish but buoyed themselves up with the promises they had received; and from this I conclude that there is no need for me to despair either … they are finally preserved and sustained by the Word. May God be with me in these trying days.
