The Best of the Portals of Prayer
Read: Proverbs 6:16-22 // Psalm 25
“There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”
Proverbs 6:16-19
Watching for What God Hates
In the face of the things that God hates, who can plead innocence? “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander. These are what defile a person.” [Matthew 5:19-20] These are the specific behaviors that produce uncleanness in themselves and suffering for others – things that are detested by God. On the Lord’s Day, as on every day, it is time to take stock on our lives. We have the opportunity to receive forgiveness and Christ’s nourishment in the Lord’s Supper for the strength and power to amend our ways. We come to the foot of the cross, and there we lay our sins of rebellion against God’s holy will. We leave God’s house of worship clean of the stains of our sin, for God has bestowed on us the forgiveness won for us by the death of His Son on the cross.
