“What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Matthew 8:27
What Sort of Man?
The disciples marveled time and again at the evidence of Jesus’ supernatural powers. He gave sight to the blind; He healed the lepers; He made water into wine. And now, crossing the storm tossed Sea of Galilee with His disciples, He speaks a word to the elements of nature. At once, the wind dies down, and the waters become as smooth as glass. Small wonder that the astonished cried: “what sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey Him?” The cry “what sort of man?” has echoed down the ages as men have beheld the power of the Son of God. What sort of man is this, whose coming changed the course of history? What sort of is this, who has power on earth to forgive sins? What sort of man is this, who calls Himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life? What sort of man is this, whom even the bonds of death could not hold? What sort of man? He is the God-man. He is the Lord of Glory. He is our Savior and dearest friend.
O Thou, whose voice can still the restless waves, speak words of peace to our troubled hearts. Amen
