The Best of the Portals of Prayer

Read: John 8:31-36 // Psalm 46

“The Lord is a refuge to His people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.”
Joel 3:16

A Mighty Fortress is our God

Some of the most impressive structures in Europe are the ancient castles that have stood for centuries. Virtually impenetrable, these miniature cities were a safe haven and ultimate source of security for those who lived within their walls. The fact that they still stand is a testament to their great strength.
Martin Luther’s metaphor of God as a “Mighty Fortress” is especially fitting. Luther lived among castles, even staying in one for short period of time. He saw them as silent reminders of awesome strength and security. He chose His words well. No longer fearing God as a wrathful judge, Luther now saw Him as a tower of strength.
On this Reformation Day, we give thanks for this sweet simplicity and awesome power of the Gospel message of redemption by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. By faith, we are able to see, as did Luther, that our God is our refuge and strength. As God’s beloved children, we turn to Him in every situation, knowing that we can entrust our lives to Him, be still, and know that He is God.
Let Satan try his best. Our God, our “Fortress”, is stronger. Eventually, all the ancient castles will crumble and fall, but the Word of the Lord will endure forever. “The Kingdom ours remaineth.”
