Day by Day with Martin Luther

Read: Job 40:1-42:17 2nd Corinthians 5:11-21 Proverbs 22:14

“The Christian Law”

“As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.”
[Romans 14:1]

No outward rule can maintain itself without an inward gentleness, much less the government of the church. Away with those who are out to set forth the Christian life in perfection. But the Christian law is that the strong must bear the weak. They, on the contrary, cry, “whoever does not do what he should is under the curse.“ Don’t you know, you ungodly man, that there are bones and flesh in the body? So it is in the church. It is like a hospital, where there are the strong and the weak, there are bones and flesh. One bears another’s burden. The Christian life, therefore, is a mixture of strength and weakness. One supports the other. This is indeed a comforting situation.
