The Best of the Portals of Prayer

Read: Matthew 2:1-13

“Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding.”
Proverbs 3:13

The Long, Hard Road

When our Lord was born in Bethlehem, Wise Men from the East tried to find Him. They found Him because they used wisdom. They were wise enough to follow God’s direction, wise enough not to be offended at where they were to find Him, and wise enough to come for the distinct purpose of worshiping Him.
There is something sudden, startling, and satisfying about the discovery of wisdom. It brings a sense of thrill and relief. To get understanding is equally satisfying, even though we must walk such a long, hard road to get it. Our Lord must teach us many lessons, and often we are such unwilling students.
To understand His love for us, He must teach us to understand our great need for His love. The more we understand how rebellious we are, the more we understand how reconciling He is. The more we understand our weakness, the more we understand His strength. And so, He leads us day by day in ways strange to us, but clear to Him.
In hours of loneliness, we discover how close how He can be. On sickbeds, we can take time to look up to see His face shine upon us. At the death of a Christian, we can learn better to know Him and the power of His resurrection. When he rebukes us for our sins, we realized that He is truly the friend of sinners.

Jesus, please do not become impatient with us, but lead us on the way to a better understanding of Your great love. Amen.
