The Best of the Portals of Prayer
Read: Matthew 6:25-34 // Psalm 62
“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.”
Proverbs 12:25
The Answer to Anxiety
Many people are attacked by anxiety these days. The cares and concerns of life weigh them down. Jesus addressed Himself to the problem when He said: “do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat and what you will drink, no about your body, what you will put on” [Matthew 6:25]. He repeatedly said “your heavenly Father.” It is our heavenly Father who feeds us. If He takes care of the birds, He will take care of us also.
If that is not sufficient to calm our anxiety, we consider who is telling us this in the Sermon on the Mount. It is the Son of God, yes, God Himself, who is speaking to us. What He says is not simply a matter of words. He who speaks these words is the Word of God made flesh. That Word expressed Himself in direct action. The Son of God, Himself the Word, came to earth to show His concern, not only for food and clothing, but also for our eternal salvation. He Himself is the Bread of Life. We can now stand before God. St. Paul wrote: “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things” [Romans 8:21-32].
Lord, You know how weak I am. Give me strength in my times of anxiety. Amen.
