God Beyond Reason
Do we have to leave our minds outside the church door? Is it intellectually indefensible to believe in the Son of God who has revealed Himself in the Bible? Some people doubt that faith and reason can be harmonized. They do not bother to check what the Bible actually says. For them, there can be no “unanswered questions”, though they do not flinch when doctors cannot diagnose their illness, or when scientists find conflicting sets of data.
This kind of thinking has influenced us more than it should. Although we may regard what the Bible teaches as true, we tend to think that science is more “true” than the Bible. We trust our reason more than God’s revelation. At that point, God would remind us that He created us with the very power to reason. He expects us to use it, but also to recognize its limitations. At times, our powers of perception and reasoning fail us. Sometimes, our Lord is above our powers of comprehension – even if we could reason perfectly. We may not be able to completely comprehend God’s salvation in Christ, but we can believe it. Thank God, that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
